“Human dignity is inviolable” – This familiar first line of the German constitution is hard to understand substantively and to apply to actual situations of conflict, as this book analyzing bioethical debates in West Germany shows. From the abortion debate (1970s) to the preimplantation diagnosis debate (2010s), it traces the transformation of our understanding of human dignity and examines the causes and central figures in this transformation.
